3 Tips for Choosing Your NJ Wedding Photographer

So, you need to pick a wedding photographer, but you don’t know where to start.

You’ve probably already seen plenty of beautiful photos. Now you’re comparing websites, scrolling through Instagram, and trying to figure out who actually feels right for your wedding.

In my Instagram reel, I share three things to look at: the style of the photographs, what the photographer offers, and the person behind the camera. If you’re planning a wedding in North Jersey or anywhere across New Jersey, here’s how to put those three tips to use.

Watch my three tips on Instagram.

1. Find a photography style you love

Do you prefer something light and airy? Dark and moody? Vibrant color with the feel of film?

Start with what catches your eye. You don’t need to know all the photography terms. Save a few images you love, then look for what they have in common. Maybe it’s the color, the soft light, the movement, or the way the people look comfortable being themselves.

Look through more than a handful of favorite images. Ask to see a complete wedding gallery so you can get a feel for portraits, candid moments, indoor photographs, and the reception. Think about whether you would be happy seeing your own day photographed that way.

My work is vibrant and inspired by film, with a focus on personal connection and photographs that feel like you. If you’re looking for a film photographer, ask to see examples photographed on film so you can get a feel for the color, texture, and character of the images. When you’re looking at any photographer’s portfolio, you should feel drawn to the work they’re already creating.

2. Understand what’s included

Start with a practical question: will there be one photographer or multiple photographers?

That detail matters when you’re thinking about how your day will unfold. If you’re getting ready in separate locations at the same time, for example, ask how the photographer would cover both. A second photographer can help with simultaneous moments and additional angles, but the right arrangement depends on your plans.

Before comparing collections, get clear answers to a few questions:

  • How many hours of coverage are included?
  • Who will photograph the wedding, and will there be a second photographer?
  • What photographs and products will you receive?
  • When and how will your final photos be delivered?

Share your locations and the moments that matter most to you. That gives the photographer something concrete to work with when recommending coverage.

For my wedding clients, final wedding photos are delivered within 45 days of the wedding. Whatever photographer you choose, make sure you understand the delivery timeline before booking.

3. Choose someone you actually connect with

Above all, you should feel comfortable with the person photographing your wedding.

A beautiful website can get your attention. A conversation helps you figure out whether you want that person beside you on your wedding day.

Your photographer will be there for personal moments, family photos, and the occasional change of plan. Their energy matters. You want someone you can talk to, feel comfortable around, and trust to give you direction when you need it.

Set up a conversation before you book. Notice whether they listen to your ideas, answer your questions clearly, and show an interest in what you want from the day. If you’re nervous about being photographed, say so. Ask how they help couples feel at ease.

You shouldn’t have to put on a different personality for your wedding photos. Finding someone you connect with makes it easier to show up as yourself.
